There are times when even the most disciplined amongst us find it hard to avoid indulging in delicious and carb-loaded festive food. You may (most often than not) end up giving in to guilty pleasures and then feel really bad about it later. A detox plan will help you deal with that momentary lack of restraint and keep the guilt at bay. A detox will help you rid your body of toxins and help you feel fresh and light.

“After an indulgent weekend, one obvious remedy is to flush your body with 8-10 glasses of water or fluids and abstain from any further indulgence,” says Dr. Philip Miller, a board-certified family physician with 35 years of clinical experience.

With so many delicious food items to choose from in spite of our best efforts to avoid eating, we often end up cheating and are unable to resist an extra helping of treats. If you have just had a similar experience and gone through an extremely indulgent weekend, we’ve got ten detox tips for you to try out –

Opt for herbal teas

Put that teapot on the stove and get brewing. Green tea, Oolong and White tea are in general extremely beneficial for people trying to lose weight. These teas are also extremely rich in antioxidants and catechins, which quicken the liver detoxification process. Dandelion Root Tea is another great tea for detoxifying the liver. Drink these teas once a day on a regular basis for it to be truly beneficial.

Go green

Always opt for a lot of leafy green vegetables and fresh salads after any overindulgence of food. Consuming vegetables raw or in the form of smoothies or juices will not only help you remove toxins from your body, but it will also help it heal faster. Green juices thus help cleanse your digestive system while providing an extra dose of readily available nutrients. We would also recommend staying away from sweets for at least a week.

Exercise

Exercising is an extremely important activity. Not getting any exercise is probably one of the worst things you can do to your body. Movement helps the fluids in the lymphatic system circulate and thus, remove stored toxins. If you don’t exercise, these fluids can accumulate in your body which in turn will affect your lungs and heart. Any activity like brisk walking, running or even skipping can revitalize the lymph nodes helping your body get into detox mode real quick. Exercising also puts you in a more health-conscious mindset because of which you are less likely to go on another binge.

Water

Many food items that people often binge on (fries, burgers and chips) are full of salt. Salt causes the body to bloat and retain fluids. With all the toxins built up from the over-indulgent weekend that you just had flushed out the toxins is of utmost importance. This is where water comes into the picture. Make sure you drink 2-3 liters of water every day. This will help you cleanse your body and detoxify it well.

Eat at Home

When you binge you end up consuming a lot of calories, much more than your body needs. While eating out you never know how healthy or unhealthy a particular dish is. Often the dishes that are portrayed as being extremely healthy in restaurants aren’t so in reality. The best way to know exactly what you’re eating is by cooking and eating at food at home. This makes it easier to control the amount of salt, oil, starch, etc. that goes into your food. Also, eating organically for the next few weeks to counteract all the pesticides and other potentially toxic ingredients that you may encounter while eating outside is a good idea. Hence, keeping a strict check on what you eat can only be carried out properly if you cook at home.

De-stress

According to research, people who associate indulgence with guilt are less successful at losing weight when compared to those who consider going a little overboard a way of celebrating special occasions. This is why it is extremely necessary that you forgive yourself for binging and then try to de-stress and relax your body by catching up on your yoga classes. Even meditating for 15 minutes every day will go a long way in keeping your body fit.

After a weekend of binging, a detox plan is the best thing you can do for your body. This is important in order to get back on track and into your healthy lifestyle routine as soon as possible. So in case you have gone a little overboard these past few days, start detoxifying right away.
